Biography

Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist who led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He was also one of the most important philanthropists of his time, donating millions of dollars to libraries, universities, and other public works. Carnegie believed that personal wealth should be used to make the world a better place, and he was a leader in the development of the modern philanthropic model.

Carnegie made his fortune in the steel industry, founding the Carnegie Steel Company in the late 19th century. He was a pioneer in the use of the Bessemer process, a new method for mass-producing steel that made it much more affordable and accessible. He eventually sold his steel company to J.P. Morgan for a record-breaking $480 million, making him one of the richest men in the world at the time.

Life and Career

Andrew Carnegie was born on November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland, to a family of modest means. His father was a handloom weaver, and his mother worked as a seamstress. When Carnegie was 12 years old, his family immigrated to the United States, settling in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. Despite his lack of formal education, Carnegie was a voracious reader and had a keen mind for business.

He began his career as a telegraph messenger, and later worked as a clerk and a telegraph operator for the Pennsylvania Railroad. In his free time, he invested in the stock market and began to build his own businesses, including a telegraph company and a steel mill. By the age of 30, Carnegie was a wealthy man and had established himself as one of the most successful businessmen in America.
