“A Book About You” is one of Charles F. Haanel’s more philosophical books.
He shares his opinions on the nature of the universe and how he believes that energy or “vibration” pervades and influences everything around us — even energy from the planets and the stars.
Whether you agree or disagree with his points, the book still provides some wonderful food for thought. If you’re in a mood to ponder, well… Charles F. Haanel ponders in this book.
You might very well find some enjoyable camaraderie in his ponderings. Below are some of the main sections from his book with excerpts and descriptions!
By the way, you should know that you can get access to Charles F. Haanel’s Master Key System and hundreds of other books from authors like Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale inside my Secrets of Success Community. It’s free to try :)
“At birth you received a certain vibration consisting of the combination of ethereal vibrations existing at the moment. This vibration was impressed upon you very much as a note from an orchestra may be transmitted by the stylus of a phonograph to the sensitive wax receiver with every single note and every shade of tone intact. Thus the time of birth determined the nature and intensity of the vibrations...You may use the characteristics given to you at birth, or change them as you will.”
Haanel believed that at the time of your birth, you are influenced by specific cosmic vibrations. Whether you agree or disagree, this belief is really not much different than accepting that you were born with certain personality traits — gifts, strengths, and weaknesses… whatever the cause of those quirks might be.
The important thing is life as a journey where you are equipped with certain tools from birth, symbolized by these vibrations, and it’s ultimately up to you to decide how to utilize them to shape your destiny.
“The subconscious mind is continually broadcasting, just as the radio station does. The reception depends upon the ability of the receiving set. The mind of every human being is both a broadcasting and a receiving station for the vibrations of thought. Every human brain is both a broadcasting and receiving station for the vibration of thought, but just as the radio receiving set must be in tune with the sending set, so must the receiving set of the brain be in tune with the transmitting set.”
Who we are — and how we think — isn’t (obviously) just influenced by the planets (i.e. genetics, random chance, etc.), but by our own thoughts. Haanel suggests each thought we have is not just a fleeting notion but rather a vibration that extends outward, similar to ripples in a pond.
Our minds are like transmitters, he says, sending out these thought vibrations into the world. It’s an intriguing perspective, suggesting that what we think might have a broader impact than we realize. This idea opens up a contemplation of how our thoughts shape not just our personal reality, but potentially touch the world around us in ways we might not fully understand.
“The earth is a huge magnet electrified by the sun and the impulse, sensations, and varied states of consciousness of every living thing depend upon the vibrations which are constantly being received from the planets. The planets too are huge magnets but of varying sizes and of different constitutions, each of which is likewise electrified by the sun.”
Scientifically, it wouldn’t be incorrect to say that all human experience is electrical by nature — pain, pleasure, love…
It’s all electrical signals transmitted by the brain.
Whether this viewpoint resonates with you or not, it invites consideration of a world where every atom, every being, is part of a grand electrical network, pulsing with unseen energy.
“We speak and even think of the sun as 'giving light.' Yet we know that it is simply giving forth energy that produces vibrations in the ether at the rate of four hundred trillion a second, causing what are termed light waves, so that what is called light is simply a mode of motion, and the only light that there is, is the sensation produced in the mind by the motion of these waves.”
The more you learn about the light, the more weird physics becomes. But to me, the big takeaway here is a reminder that light (particularly that from the sun) influences our attitude, feelings, and behavior.
There’s a lot of good research on why getting enough sunlight every day (particularly in the morning) is important. Many people even experience seasonal depression when they’re not getting enough sunlight!
“All that the ear perceives in the beautiful and wonderful music of a symphony orchestra is simply motion of one dimension, or motion in a straight line. Noise and tone are then simply terms of contrast. Noise is due to a non-periodic vibration. Tones are sounds having continuity and containing such characteristics as pitch, frequency, intensity, and quality.”
One of the things I love about this book by Charles F. Haanel is how it talks about these little things… that actually have a significant impact on us — like sound and (the next one) color.
When was the last time you sat in silence, for instance? Or when was the last time you listened to music to intentionally create a certain feeling in yourself? It’s amazing how much impact sound has on us. And we can use that to our advantage in our everyday lives.
“Color is, therefore, one of the manifestations of vibration and all vibration manifests in corresponding color, the color being merely an indication of the occult chemical activity. [...] Nature’s scale of vibration is very wide in its extent. It commences with sound, then merges into thermal heat waves, and these vibrations climb the vibratory scale as the temperature increases and merge into the vibrations of the radiant heat waves in the infrared which reach up to the visible red of the light spectrum.”
You might not immediately think of color when it comes to your feelings and behaviors, but recent science shows it does have an impact.
Mental Health America writes, “Bright, warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) stimulate energy and happiness while cool, subdued colors (blues, greens, purples) are soothing and calming.”
“When a substance is heated, it gives out part of its heat to a medium that surrounds it. This heat-energy is propagated as undulations in the medium, and proceeds outward with the enormous velocity of 186,000 miles per second. If the temperature of the hot substance be not very great, these undulations do not effect the eye, but are invisible, forming rays of dark heat; but as the temperature rises, we begin to see a few red rays, and we say that the body is 'red hot.' As the temperature still continues to rise, the body passes to a yellow and then to a white heat, until it ultimately glows with a splendour like that of the Sun. This splendour of the Sun is but an indication of the nature of the process that is taking place, for light, heat, and energy are but the process of releasing solar energy.”
Cold showers have become a huge craze over the last decade. In fact I recently tried a cryo chamber and it was crazy! There’s no denying it… temperature has a HUGE impact on the human mind. Many therapists have even recommended cold therapy (or saunas) in order to help treat depression and anxiety.
Plus Wim Hof said this: “Cold showers are the gateway to flow and energy and peace. I'm not exaggerating. It's the entry point from which you will learn the power of the mind over the body.”
“The vibratory activities of the planetary universe are governed by a law of periodicity. Everything that lives has periods of birth, growth, and fruitage. These periods are governed by the Septimal Law. The Law of Sevens governs the days of the week, the phases of the moon, the harmonies of light, heat, electricity, magnetism, and atomic structure. It governs the life of individuals and of nations, and it dominates the activities of the commercial world. Life is growth, and growth is change. Each seven year period takes us into a new cycle.”
There’s a lot of truth to Haanel’s concept of ‘periodicity’ — by which he means that everything lives and dies, increases and decreases, goes up and down. For example, your body replaces about 330 billion cells every single day. Within 7-10 years, you’re literally a new person… pretty wild. And it’s a reminder to not get stuck in old habits and old routines. Yesterday’s mistakes are a bad excuse for today’s.
“Emotions may be expressed through mental, verbal, or physical action, and they usually find expression in one of these three ways and are therefore released and this energy dissipated in a few hours; but when by reason of honour, pride, anger, hatred, or bitterness, these emotions are buried from consciousness, they become mental abscesses in the subconscious realm and cause bitter suffering.”
We’ve all known someone who is chronically grouchy.
Maybe it was a friend or a parent or a grandparent. Nothing seemed to ever make them happy — they would complain about bad traffic, bad weather… and if there was nothing to complain about, they would find something to complain about.
Our emotions impact our outcomes. And it’s important to manage them if we want to live a happy, successful life.
“The male is the positive or electrical charge and the female is the negative or magnetic charge. The male represents current, force, energy; the female capacity, resistance, and power. When another person enters your magnetic field, what is it that passes from one to the other? What causes the thrill and tingle over the entire sympathetic nervous system? It is the cells rearranging themselves so as to carry the charge of energy, life, and vitality that is passing from one to the other, and which you are receiving by the process of induction. You are being magnetized and in this process you are assuming the qualities and characteristics of the person whom you are contacting.”
This idea of ‘magnetism’ is at the heart of the philosophy of many personal development gurus — even Napoleon Hill and Earl Nightingale. They all talked about how our thoughts attract things — whether we like it or not.
This is why it’s so important to be intentional with our thoughts and with our actions. Everything in our lives is a result of what we’ve attracted, or not attracted. The more responsibility we take, the more power we have.
“You imagine many things that are not so, but if you continue to imagine these things, they eventually come to pass; why is this? It is because the imagination is the process of imaging these things in or on your mind, and this process is nature’s method of creation.”
Look around you. Maybe you see a table. Your phone. Your coffee cup. You television. Everything made by humans that you see first started as an idea in someone’s head. In fact, none of it could have existed if it hadn’t started there.
The ideas in your head could just as easily come into reality. But you have to exercise your imagination… and then take relentless action.
