I’ve been re-listening to Earl Nightingale’s audio program, The Strangest Secret (which you can access if you’re a Secrets of Success member!).
What a lot of people don’t realize about Earl Nightingale is that he was first and foremost, an entrepreneur.
In fact, his main business, Nightingale-Conant, survives today and continues to inspire people around the world.
And I always get excited — because I think there’s a LOT of overlap between this personal development stuff… and entrepreneurship.
Entrepreneurship is one of the most difficult and ambitious things someone can set out to do…
…and so it requires the right mindset and personal beliefs to do it well.
So today’s bit of wisdom is for those of you with entrepreneurship spirits (although it can apply to any part of your life!).
It’s about competition.
“Competition only exists at all,” Earl Nightingale says, “if you choose to play follow the leader.”
He explains…
"Rolls Royce isn’t in competition with anyone. Neither is Mercedes Benz. Take a look at IBM and the rest of the top cats — people, at the top of their lines of business, aren’t concerned about competition, they’re too busy creating… If you’re a pace-setter, you’re not competing, you’re leading."
In other words, don’t play follow the leader.
Do something that YOU think is really special.
Something that you’re excited about.
Because if there’s ONE THING about you or your business that people will never be able to copy or compete with, it’s your passion. 🙂
