How Do You Define SUCCESS?

This is Earl Nightingale’s definition…

We talk a lot about success in our society…

But what IS success?

Well, success is different for everyone. And yet there is one commonality, which is the pursuit of a deliberate destination.

I think there’s no better definition than how Earl Nightingale put it…

"Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal."

He continues…

"I’ll tell you who the successful people are…

"The school teacher who teaches school because that’s what he or she wants to do. The woman who’s a wife and mother because she wanted to become a wife and mother and is doing a good job of it. The man who runs the corner gas station because that was his dream, that’s what he wanted to do. The salesman who wants to become a top-notch salesman and grow his organization.

Success is anyone who is doing, deliberately, a predetermined job, because that is what he decided to do… deliberately."

You catch that?

Success isn’t about WHAT you accomplish…

It’s about accomplishing whatever it is you want to accomplish!

It’s about setting a goal and deliberately taking action toward that goal. It’s about steering your own ship rather than letting your ship drift along at sea.

Here’s Earl again…

"Think of a ship leaving a harbor and think of it with a complete voyage mapped out and planned. The captain and crew know exactly where it’s going and how long it’ll take. It has a definite goal. Now 9,999 times out of 10,000 it will get to where it started out to get.

"Let’s take another ship just like the first only let’s not put a crew on it or a captain at a helm. Let’s give it no aiming point, no goal, no destination. We just start the engines and let it go. I think you’ll agree with me that if it gets out of the harbor at all, it’ll either sink or wind up on some deserted beach, a derelict. It can’t go any place because it has no destination and no guidance, and it’s the same with a human being."

Success is ALL about having a destination in mind… and then mapping out how to get there.

And counter-intuitively, the higher, more ambitious your goals… the easier your dreams will be to achieve! Here’s how Tim Ferriss put it…

"It’s lonely at the top. 99% of the world is convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre middle-ground. The level of competition is thus fiercest for “realistic” goals, paradoxically making them the most time- and energy-consuming. It is easier to raise $10,000,000 than it is $1,000,000. It is easier to pick up the one perfect 10 in the bar than the five 8s.

"If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think."

That’s what it’s all about.

Dream big. Set your goals. And then work hard to achieve those goals.

You’ll be absolutely shocked at how far you can go if you just do those three things 🙂
