I had the SAME thought when I was re-reading The Master-Key System by Charles F. Haanel again.
And then… a couple chapters later he dropped this bomb that will help you to stop defeating your own success!
Actually, I find this kind of thinking so rare among ‘gurus’ on social media or many mindset coaches.
And there’s a good reason for it.
Charles F. Haanel was not just a personal development author… he was the president of one of the largest conglomerates in America at the time!
He was also an expert marketer who fully believed that your wealth was directly proportional to your ability to benefit other people.
I call this ‘Over-delivering’.
I’ve literally been selling T-shirts and trying to make #overdelivering a hashtag that sparks a movement.
So it was SO cool to see Charles F. Haanel trying to do the same thing back in the 1920s.
He talks about it like this.
He says that if anyone thinks ‘selfish’ thoughts they are bringing about their own financial ruin.
He calls selfish thoughts ‘the germ of defeat’.
Instead, to truly become wealthy and successful you have to focus on your mind on how much you’re going to benefit others – not yourself!

It’s so obvious when you look at it like this right?
The more that you focus on over-delivering the quicker the success you’re craving will come to you.
It’s fascinating that Charles F Haanel doesn’t say there is anything wrong with making a lot of money – he himself was a super rich – but he knew that his wealth was worth nothing if he couldn’t bring huge value to people in every encounter and transaction.
And here’s the coolest thing.
Haanel calls this kind of thinking ‘money consciousness’.
Isn’t that AWESOME?
So many people today get trapped in this cycle of making money by any means necessary – even if that means scamming, cheating and manipulating your way there.
But… that’s never going to lead to long-term wealth creation.
And when you have this ‘money conscious’ Charles F. Haanel says ‘you will find as much pleasure in the execution as in the satisfaction of attainment and achievement’.
So here’s my question to you.
Do you get satisfaction in helping your customers? Is that what you live for?
If not… then think about how you combine something you love with some way of making money.
Or make making money part of some wider mission you have to serve others.
