The fear of criticism is the greatest enemy of anyone who ever dreams of success.
The whole idea of Think and Grow Rich is that Andrew Carnegie – one of the wealthiest businessmen who ever lived – asked Napoleon Hill to share his secret of success with the world.
But the book almost never happened.
Here’s what Napoleon Hill says:
"[Andrew Carnegie’s] suggestion set up a goal for me, far out of proportion to any I had ever conceived. As quick as a flash, my mind began to create alibis and excuses. Something inside of me said, ‘You can’t do it...what will your relatives think of you?...people will think you are crazy…‘"
Napoleon Hill struggled with the fear of criticism for nearly all his life.
It was his greatest enemy.
And he names the fear of criticism as the greatest enemy of anyone who ever dreams of success too.
Here’s what Napoleon Hill says about this fear and how to conquer it:
"People refuse to take chances in business, because they fear the criticism which may follow if they fail. The fear of criticism, in such cases, is stronger than the desire for success."
I don’t know about you, but that sentence hits me SO hard.
Actually, it scares me.
I don’t want to look back and think, ‘In my life, fear was stronger than desire’.
But we all fear what our loved ones will think…we fear what people at work will think… what complete strangers will think…
So what to do?
Here’s the prescription from Napoleon Hill:
"Experience with thousands of people has proved that lack of persistence is a weakness common to the majority of men. It is a weakness which may be overcome by effort. The ease with which lack of persistence may be conquered will depend entirely upon the intensity of one’s desire."
Make your desire stronger than your fear.
Honestly, I think this sentence pretty much sums up all the wisdom in Think of Grow Rich.
It’s a manual for intensifying your desire for success. For making desire a force strong enough to defeat any fear, doubt or setback in your path.
