Yesterday I told you the story of Earl Nightingale and how he produced his groundbreaking 17-min track, The Strangest Secret.
(If you didn’t see it, go read the email with the subject line: Earl Nightingale’s “Strangest” Secret)
But I want to reiterate one thing that I think is really important.
Earl Nightingale had produced hundreds — probably thousands — of radio shows and recordings up to this point. He was an entrepreneur. He had an insurance agency.
He had lots of things going on.
And yet, this one on-the-fly, 17-min track he recorded for his sales team before he left on a sailing trip… THAT is what caught on and catapulted him into the realm of legends.
The point is this…
You never know which thing is going to catch on. You can create hundreds of different things, put them out there, and then you produce one thing… and it changes your life.
There’s a popular story about Jerry Uelsmann, a professor at the University of Florida. On the first day of class, he divided his film photography students into two groups. The first group was told they’d be graded solely on the quantity of photos that they took. The second group was called the “quality” group and told they only needed to turn in a single photo… but it needed to be almost perfect.
At the end of the class, Jerry Uelsmann was surprised to find that ALL of the best photos were taken by the quantity group.
Oftentimes, the best way to create quality… is to create quantity.
Keep producing. Keep creating. Keep showing people your work.
Because you never know what is going to stick 🙂
