This is probably my favorite quote ever from Benjamin Franklin…
"Speak ill of no man, but speak all the good you know of everybody."
I’m convinced that if you apply that one principle to your life, you’re going to immediately increase your threshold for success.
Charles F. Haanel said something similar…
"Eliminate, therefore, any possible tendency to complain of conditions as they have been or as they are…"
But he adds this…
"…because it rests with you to change them and make them what you would like them to be."
Complaining is like yelling.
People might say they yell in order to vent.
But research shows that when you yell because you’re angry, the act of yelling actually makes you angrier. It’s an action that increases the intensity of the emotion that triggered it.
The same thing is true with complaining…
When you complain, you actually feel worse about whatever it is you’re complaining about.
The more you complain, the worse you’ll feel.
It’s kind of akin (but opposite) to power posing. Research shows that when you place your body in “high confidence” positions, you actually feel more confident. If you place your body in “low confidence” positions, you will feel less confident.
We might say we’re complaining because of the situation, but the complaining makes us feel worse about the situation.
So don’t complain.
Not about people. Not about situations.
This is one of the biggest secrets to success.
Learn to laugh at yourself.
Treat failure and setbacks with curiosity.
Admit that you have the power to change your circumstances.
Don’t blame the rest of the world for your problems.
Keep moving forward.
And don’t forget to smile 🙂
