Many times, the well-meaning words of a loved one in our lives can become a negative influence. And it’s so difficult to catch.
Right at the end of Think and Grow Rich there’s this section about something called the ‘seventh basic evil’.
In it, Napoleon Hill says that building your desire, mastering persistence and going after success is not enough to keep you from giving up.
And it’s not your fault at all.
It’s that other people hold a ‘negative influence’ over your progress.
Here’s what Napoleon Hill says about the seventh evil:
"This affliction cannot properly be classed as a fear. It is more deeply seated and more often fatal than all of the six fears. For want of a better name, let us call this evil ‘susceptibility to negative influences’."
Sounds a little out there.
But it gives me shivers every time I read this section because I have NEVER read this explained so accurately in a book on success.
Here’s how Hill describes it tells us to identify the seventh evil within us.
"To protect yourself against negative influences, whether of your own making, or the result of the activities of negative people around you, recognize that you have a willpower, and put it into constant use, until it builds a wall of immunity against negative influences in your own mind."
Recognizing negative influences is really hard.

So what can we do?
Napoleon Hill prescribes a list of 72 questions to analyze whether you have negative influences from others in your mindset.
Here’s a few of them:
- “Are you easily influenced by others, against your own judgment?”
- “Do you feel it your duty to share other people’s worries? If so, why?”
- “What connection, if any, do you see between the people with whom you associate most closely, and any unhappiness you may experience?”
You could nail all the 15 steps to success in Think and Grow Rich – but without protecting your mind against the negative influence of others, you will be held back.
