The Master-Key System introduced an idea that’s still as radical today as it was 100 years ago.
That idea is this.
You can change your life by thinking differently.
Charles F Haanel believed it was ‘thought’ that separated the rich from the poor, the successful from the destitute, the happy from the unhappy…
If you’ve ever heard someone talking about this it’s likely they got it from The Master Key System.
But here’s why it’s still such a radical idea!
On the one hand, it’s a huge responsibility to consider that our thoughts determine our reality.
At the same time, it’s liberating to know that unimaginable success comes from a simple shift in mindset.
Thought is the ‘master key’ to everything in life.
Few people are willing to accept this…
But according to the 17 lessons below from The Master Key System you’re just a couple thoughts away from health, success, wealth, friendships, relationships and everything else you desire!
1. Thought is the most powerful thing in the world
2. You can have anything you want by thinking it
3. Your predominant mental attitude creates your reality
4. The subconscious mind works like the physical body
5. The subconscious mind manifests thought into being according to what the conscious mind tells it is true
6. You can control your subconscious mind by analyzing every thought to see if it is constructive or destructive
7. You are the result of your past thinking
8. You are fully in control of your future by means of your mental attitude
9. All experiences are for your benefit
10. You can change your subconscious mind by focusing and concentrating intensely on the object of your desire
11. You have to believe that your desire has already been fulfilled
12. Concentration is the most important skill of successful people
13. The most powerful form of concentration is a state of being
14. You can only become successful by giving in order to receive
15. True satisfaction comes as much from helping people as it does from achieving your own desires
16. Spirituality is the most practical thing in the world
17. The real battle of life is for ideas
Again and again The Master Key System teaches that thought is the most powerful force in the world.
There are two main ways it reinforces this idea:
Charles F. Haanel was not just a deep thinker on matters of the mind.
He was also one of America’s leading businessmen and was president of one of the largest conglomerates at the time.
He wrote that successful people were only successful because they could ‘hold ideals of conditions which they wish to realize’ and they could keep them in mind for long enough to manifest them into the world.
For example, he encouraged readers to vividly concentrate on the objects of their desire.
But he also encouraged readers to vividly imagine anything they wished to create or launch into the world – for example, he references how Nikola Tesla imagined each of his designs in extreme detail before building any of them.
Because of this Tesla’s designs ‘rarely failed’.
Charles F. Haanel likened our minds to a ‘magnet’.
For example, he wrote that if we walked around afraid of a disaster, then we would bring a disaster into being.
In the same way he said we could train our mind to be a ‘money magnet’.
He says this lesson explains every possible ‘physical, mental or spiritual’ condition.
Charles F. Haanel divided our ‘mind’ into two parts:
He said the conscious mind allowed us to analyze, control and direct the subconscious mind.
But the subconscious mind holds all the power.
He repeats the point again and again that the subconscious mind works like the physical body – if you receive a wound then thousands of cells automatically begin healing you at once.
The subconscious mind wants to work towards your health and wellbeing and if you don’t interfere with it the result is always ‘perfect’.
But if we are racked with thoughts of ‘fear, doubt and anxiety’ then this work is obstructed.
Charles F. Haanel makes a point of capitalizing the worth Truth and True.
He believed that the Truth was always positive, healing and tending towards abundance.
He believed that we could ‘feel’ when something was Truth because it has a beneficial emotional impact on us.
In contrast, thoughts of fear, panic, anger, greed, self-deprecation were unwholesome and ‘untrue’ and full of ‘false impressions’.
But the subconscious mind cannot direct itself towards what is True on its own.
It’s the conscious mind that informs what is true or untrue, and the subconscious mind manifests into reality accordingly.
So is there a way to put the subconscious on the right track of manifesting our greatest wishes and desires into reality?
That’s the whole idea of the Master Key!
Charles F. Haanel writes about your conscious mind being a ‘watchman at the gate’.
It’s the conscious mind’s job to analyze every thought and emotion and to guard the subconscious mind from ‘untruths’.
If a deconstructive thought is found, then the reader is encouraged to repeat positive affirmations or continue practicing the visualization technique offered in The Master Key System.
Since the subconscious mind is connected to the Universal Mind then each person manifests what they are thinking about.
Charles F. Haanel calls this the Law of Attraction.
He makes a comparison between someone going out to build a physical home for himself and being careful to select only the best materials… but then being ‘careless’ about their Mental Home.
In the same way you are the result of your past thinking, you’re also fully in control of your future.
This is because you can construct a mental attitude to reflect the circumstances in which you want to live.
Charles F Haanel puts this lesson in this one amazing sentence:
"The imagination gathers up the material by which the mind weaves the fabric in which your future is to be clothed."
All experiences that happen in our lives are for our benefit.
The difference between people who take advantage of circumstances and people who complain comes back to the predominant mental attitude.
A successful person does not allow thoughts of failure or dejection into their minds and so it cannot manifest into the world.
In the same way, any ‘negative’ situation in your life is a reflection of a destructive thought that you can correct in your thinking.
Here’s what Charles F. Haanel says is the remedy for any problems in your life:
"Mentally concentrate on the object of your desire; when you are concentrating you are impressing the sub-conscious."
He says this is ‘the way by which the best results are secured’.
He goes on to say:
"It is the method which is producing such extraordinary results that many think that miracles are being accomplished. It is the method by which every great inventor, every great financier, every great statesman has been enabled to convert the subtle and invisible forces of desire, faith and confidence into actual, tangible, concrete facts in the objective world."
Because the subconscious mind is one with the Universal Mind then anything we believe is simultaneously manifested into being.
So it follows that we have to believe our desires have already been fulfilled for this accomplishment to follow.
Charles F. Haanel quotes many times from Bible and in this section he quotes from the Gospel according to Mark:
"What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them."
One of the amazing lessons in The Master Key System is the emphasis on concentration.
He says that ‘concentration’ is the single most potent way to improve our attitude of mind and in so the circumstances of our life.
Charles F. Haanel writes:
"The intensity of one moment’s earnest concentration and the intense longing to become and to attain may take you further than years of slow normal and forced effort; it will unfasten the prison bars of unbelief, weakness, impotence and self-belittlement, and you will come into a realization of the joy of overcoming."
Concentration is not just pure mental effort.
Instead, Charles F. Haanel teaches that all ‘attainment’ is the result of ‘desire plus concentration’.
In fact he puts it this way:
"Desire added to concentration will wrench any secret from nature."
In this sense he makes concentration more of a state of being that is at once physical, emotional and spiritual.
Concentrating on something while feeling frustrated or upset will not help you get closer to your goals.
Charles F. Haanel taught that selfish thoughts were the ‘germ of defeat’.
Instead, if you want to be successful you had to understand the reality that we are all part of one Universal Mind.
If your success comes at the expense of someone else, then you are destined for defeat.
He gives a number of examples to teach the lesson of giving in order to receive:
In Charles F. Haanel’s view there is nothing wrong with desiring success or wealth or fame.
But he says that successful people derive their deepest feelings of satisfaction from their understanding of the Truth in life.
This Truth includes understanding that all of life is connected.
Since success can only be by product of helping others, he writes that successful people get more satisfaction from being of benefit to others than whatever personal desire they wish to come from their efforts.
Charles F. Haanel had a dream to make ‘spirituality’ a practical and practice-able thing.
He wrote it like this:
"Spirituality is the most practical thing in the world–the only real and absolutely practical thing there is!"
He wanted The Master Key System to be a scientific approach to thought and how to use thinking, visualization and imagination to achieve anything you desire.
Towards the end of The Master Key System, Charles F. Haanel starts to write about the ‘battle of life’.
But instead of this battle being one of good against evil in the world…
He says that the battle of life is one of ‘ideas.
Here’s how he talks about this battle:
"On the one side is the constructive and creative thought, on the other side the destructive and negative thought; the creative thought is dominated by an ideal, the passive thought is dominated by appearances, and on both sides are men of science, men of letters and men of affairs. On the creative side are men who spend their time in laboratories, or over microscopes and telescopes, side by side with the men who dominate the commercial, political and scientific world; on the negative side are men who spend their time investigating law and precedent, men who mistake theology for religion, statesmen who mistake might for right, and all the millions who seem to prefer precedent to progress, who are eternally looking backward instead of forward, who see only the world without, but know nothing of the world within."
The ideas in The Master Key System are radical today because they challenge many scientific findings and commonly held beliefs.
For example, what about people with mental illnesses due to a chemical imbalance?
What of people who struggle to achieve success because of socio-economic circumstances or prejudice or lack of resources?
If success and happiness are down to attitude, then are these excuses?
Charles F. Haanel was not an apologist on these controversies and The Master Key System doesn’t tackle it head on.
Instead… The Master Key System is for anyone looking to improve their chances of success.
It’s not easy to change our predominant patterns of thought.
But with so many successful people swearing by the principles laid out in The Master Key System, it’s clear that working on your mindset will dramatically change your life in the process.
