What do the following have in common?
What all these scenarios share is persuasion. You’re trying to convince somebody to do something in each, whether it’s to get on board with your idea or engage in cooperative communication.
You can’t reach success, dreams, goals, and ambitions without knowing how to influence people and ideas. Think of where the world would be without Susan B. Anthony leading the charge in women’s voting rights, Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Fireside Chats, or Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Learn the art and science of persuasion to improve your communication skills, goal achievements, and much more. Learn how to apply the lessons from Napoleon Hill’s book “Succeed and Grow Rich Through Persuasion” to your modern life below.
Connect with your life’s purpose. Read success mindset books. Meditate. Perhaps even hire a life coach to help identify your strengths and interests.
You give your life more direction when you live it with purpose. Purpose coupled with clear goals and dedication are the equation to success.
Are you more likely to buy Girl Scout cookies from a scout who seems annoyed and unhappy to be selling or from one who appears excited? Enthusiasm makes all the difference. Moods are contagious. A pleasant and eager attitude boosts your persuasiveness. Others will be more drawn to your passion and confidence.
Control your thoughts and emotions for more effective persuasion power. Discipline increases your credibility, trust, and influence factors. Growth mindset resources and life coaches can be invaluable for mastering this foundation of your personality.
Build goodwill and strengthen relationships by going above and beyond what others expect of you. You’ll have the easiest time persuading others when they see you as generous and helpful.
Don’t wait for opportunities to fall into your lap. Good leaders take action. Put productivity ideas into practice at work. Take on more responsibilities if you want a raise or promotion. You’re more likely to stand out and cultivate a sphere of influence when you take ownership and responsibility.
Would you be more easily persuaded to go along with an idea from someone you liked or someone you didn’t? Your likeability matters. People with charm and charisma have an easier time with persuasion.
How do you ensure you’re a likable person? Practice positive traits like respect, kindness, and thoughtful communication to enhance your influence. Show empathy and understanding. Take a genuine interest in the needs and wants of others.
Cooler heads prevail. Debate fairly and amicably, recognizing you aren’t right 100% of the time. Losing your temper can result in a loss of confidence and trust from others.
Thoughts become feelings. Feelings turn into actions.
Be careful what and how you think. Prime your mind for success by repeating positive, helpful thoughts and affirmations.
Effective persuasion starts on the inside. You must genuinely believe in what you’re saying to influence others effectively.
Train yourself to focus on solutions, relationships, growth, and opportunities. A positive attitude is like a magnet drawing in others (the Law of Attraction at work!)
Your energy flows where your attention goes, so focus is vital. You won’t be as persuasive if your attention is scattered.
To really master persuasion, listen even better than you talk. Artful persuaders stay engaged in conversation and listen intently.
So, you try to convince someone of something, but the answer is ‘No.’ Take this temporary setback as a learning opportunity. Refine your persuasion strategy and try again. Persistence is the best predictor of success.
Most people are motivated by three things:
Use this understanding to make your requests, calls-to-action, or appeals more persuasive.
Connect with strong emotional feelings when trying to persuade. Create emotional connections with the people you hope to persuade through stories, bonding time, and acts of kindness.
Give something before asking for anything—the Rule of Reciprocity. You build goodwill by doing good for others before asking for something in return. Having just benefited from your generosity, your listener is more likely to return the favor.
Remember to treat others how you’d want them to treat you. If not, you’ll quickly lose their trust. Everything you say will be less persuasive after you've lost their confidence.
Don’t confuse persuasion with manipulation. Only ethical persuasion creates long-term success. You aren’t trying to get anything you haven’t earned, trick others, or power-grab.
Persuasion is more than getting what you want—it’s about developing a better version of yourself. Becoming the convincing person you want to be involves getting others to say ‘Yes’ to those things that help you enhance your life—but not at someone else's expense.
