Émile Coué (1857–1926) was a French psychologist, pharmacist, and pioneer of autosuggestion. He is best known for developing the Coué Method, which emphasizes the power of positive affirmations to influence the subconscious mind. His famous phrase, "Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better," became a cornerstone of the self-improvement movement.
Coué believed that thoughts shape reality and that by repeating positive suggestions, individuals could improve their health, confidence, and overall well-being. His book, "Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion", became a widely influential guide to personal transformation.
Unlike traditional hypnotists of his time, Coué encouraged self-empowerment, teaching people how to harness the power of their own minds. His ideas influenced later self-help and psychological movements, making him a key figure in the history of positive thinking and personal development.
Émile Coué was born in 1857 in Troyes, France. Originally trained as a pharmacist, he discovered the power of suggestion when he noticed that patients who believed in their treatments often experienced better results. This realization led him to explore the mind’s influence on health and behavior.
In his early career as a pharmacist, Coué practiced placebo techniques by offering encouraging words to customers along with their prescriptions. He noticed that positive reinforcement seemed to enhance the effectiveness of treatments. Inspired by this, he began studying hypnosis and autosuggestion, learning from pioneers like Hippolyte Bernheim.
By the early 1900s, Coué shifted his focus from pharmacy to psychotherapy, developing what became known as the Coué Method—a system of conscious autosuggestion that encouraged individuals to repeat positive affirmations, such as his famous phrase: "Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better."
In 1910, he established the Coué Institute in Nancy, France, where he taught his method to thousands of people seeking self-improvement, healing, and personal success. His ideas quickly spread across Europe and the United States, influencing the early self-help and positive thinking movements.
His landmark book, "Self-Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion" (1922), became widely popular and was translated into multiple languages. He traveled extensively, giving lectures and demonstrations that emphasized the power of the subconscious mind in shaping one's reality.
Although Coué passed away in 1926, his legacy lived on, inspiring later thought leaders in psychology, self-help, and personal development. His methods continue to influence modern practices in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), affirmations, and mindset training.
