Biography

Zig Ziglar (November 6, 1926 – November 28, 2012) was an American author, salesman, and one of the world’s most popular and motivational speakers who traveled the world delivering his messages of inspiration and encouragement. From 1970 until 2010, he traveled more than 5 million miles globally providing transformational messages of self-improvement, and motivated the sales forces of multi-national corporations and individuals who attended his seminars and read his books.

Zig Ziglar's unique delivery style and powerful messages are still remembered decades later, often through beloved success quotes like “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”, and “Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” Today he is still considered one of the most versatile authorities on the science of human potential.

Life and Career

Zig Ziglar was born Hilary Hinton Ziglar, but during his motivational speaking years came to be known as “‘Zig”, an alias that originated in elementary school. When Zig was just 6 years old, his father and one of his sisters died unexpectedly. From this moment, his mother was left alone to care for and feed the large family on minimal income. So during primary school, Zig began selling peanuts to help make extra money to help his mother.

After serving in the United States Navy during World War ll, he then enrolled at University of South Carolina, and got a part time job as a salesperson. His supervisor, P.C. Merrell saw his ability to become a brilliant salesman, and guided and encouraged him in the skill. While working as a salesman, Ziglar became interested in self-help and motivational speaking, and started giving speeches of his own. Zig soaked up all the knowledge and guidance from Merrell, and was eventually promoted to division manager. He spent many of the following decades in Sales, where he learned how to inspire and help others to achieve excellence.

Along with Dick Gardner and Hal Krause, Ziglar was a member of the founding of the American Salesmasters in 1963. In 1970, Zig traded in his career in sales to become a full-time motivational speaker. The company’s mission was to enhance the image of salespeople in the United States by providing seminars. Ziglar went on to speak extensively for audiences of the National Association of Sales Education (NASE), founded by Dick Gardner in 1965, and also became a major sales trainer for Mary Kay Cosmetics. In 1968, he became a vice president and training director for the Automotive Performance Company.

Later, he founded the Zigmanship Institute (which became Ziglar, Inc.). In addition to speaking, Ziglar wrote over 30 books, including ‘See You at The Top’, ‘Secrets Of Closing The Sale’, ‘Over The Top’, and ‘How To Get What You Want’.
