Recently my son told my wife and I that he wants to drop out of high-school.
And he made some really good arguments.
He said he’s not learning stuff that actually matters… he doesn’t plan to go to college… and it all just feels like a waste of time.
I remember feeling the same way when I was in school.
It didn’t make any sense to me — and I wasn’t any good at it.
But one of the main arguments people make for finishing high school or going to college is that it’s a good back-up plan. They say, “If your Plan A doesn’t work, you have a diploma you can fall back on.”
Yet what’s crazy is that the unemployment rate for recent college grads is now higher than for the general population…
Honestly, I don’t think a diploma is the safety net most people think it is…
Neither are most of the “safety nets” we try to put in place.
Our retirement accounts…
Our insurance…
Our savings…
The truth is that life is messy — and it doesn’t always respect our safety nets.
I don’t think it helps to spend our entire lives putting up safety nets so that we don’t get harmed…
I think it’s way more important to become a person who can figure it out… no matter what situation you’re in.
To become a life-long learner and a life-long doer.
This reminds me of a quote from Charles F. Haanel that I read recently…
"You must first have the knowledge of your power; second, the courage to dare; third, the faith to do."
That’s a way better Plan B.
The “knowledge of your power.”
The “courage to dare.”
And the “faith to do.”
Heck — I don’t know anyone with those three qualities who’s struggling with money.
We haven’t decided yet whether to let my son drop out of school or not… but I do know that, either way, so long as he has those three qualities, he’s going to be alright. 🙂
Do you have those three qualities?
The best way I know of to cultivate them is to spend time every day with the greatest personal development teachers of our era.
Charles F. Haanel, Napoleon Hill, Elsie Lincoln Benedict…
