"No Excuses!" is a powerful guide to mastering self-discipline. Tracy argues that discipline is key to success in every area of life, not talent or luck. He provides practical techniques to build self-control, overcome procrastination, and dominate your future. The book is divided into three major areas of self-discipline:

  • Personal Success
  • Business & Finance
  • The Good Life

Summary

Tracy's "No Excuses!" provides steps for developing self-discipline in all aspects of life, from career and finance to health and relationships. You'll learn to:

Part 1: Self-Discipline and Personal Success

1. Develop Self-Discipline—The Foundation of Success: Discipline is doing what needs to be done, even when you don't feel like it. Success comes from making sacrifices, delaying gratification, and taking consistent action.

2. Take Responsibility for Your Life: Stop making excuses. Your success or failure is entirely in your control. Blaming others or circumstances prevents your progress.

3. Set and Achieve Goals: Name clear goals. Write them down for better success. Break big goals into small steps and take daily action on them.

4. Overcome Procrastination with a "Do It Now" Mentality: Start immediately instead of waiting for the "right time." Use the 80/20 Rule (Pareto Principle), focusing on tasks that create the most impact.

5. Develop Courage and Confidence: Fear weakens as you take action, so immediately face what scares you. Self-confidence comes from competence, preparation, and discipline.

Part 2: Self-Discipline in Business and Finance

6. Become a Leader in Your Career: Hard work, persistence, and adaptability lead to career success. Learn new skills continuously to stay ahead in your industry.

7. Master Time Management: Prioritize high-value tasks and eliminate distractions. Plan your day in advance and work on your most important task first (Eat That Frog method).

8. Self-Discipline and Financial Freedom: Save at least 10% of your income and invest wisely. Live below your means, avoiding debt and unnecessary spending. Wealth comes from financial discipline and consistent effort.

Part 3: Self-Discipline and the Good Life

9. Prioritize Your Health, Fitness, and Personal Energy: Exercise, eat healthy, and get plenty of sleep regularly for long-term success. Discipline in your health boosts your productivity and mental clarity.

10. Build Strong Relationships: Success is more than accumulating money. Strong personal relationships lead to success. Develop trust, listen actively, and maintain self-discipline in communication.

11. Find Happiness: Happiness comes from progress, purpose, and self-control. Focus on meaningful goals, avoiding distractions and negative habits.

12. Be the Best Version of Yourself: Find lasting fulfillment through continuous self-improvement, which never ends.

"No Excuses!" can help you master self-discipline, take control of your life, and eliminate excuses for more success.

Reader Reviews
Absolutely one of the best books I have read. The book is organized extremely well and gives you steps on how to apply the principles immediately. Much of it is a reminder of how best to approach your life with self-discipline, but I also found several "new" thoughts and ideas that changed or altered my previous perspective. I took notes throughout the entire book, and it reads more like a self-taught manual or graduate program. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to hold the mirror up for themselves and gain insights into where they might be getting stuck in their current thinking or habits. I found this book to be impactful and timely as I am in the process of growing a new business. I will be leveraging many of the principles used in the book in my coaching, consulting work, and speaking engagements as they align very closely with my overall message with clients and the platform I am building. Definitely worth the time invested. I highly encourage you to really become a student of Tracy's teachings when you do decide to commit to reading it and fully dig into the content.

I loved this book! I felt I was in the company of a seriously charged and committed motivational speaker who is truly an expert on this subject. Brian Tracy urges the necessity of self-discipline as the basis of any kind of success or goal achievement. We all know this, of course! Still, I found the engaging manner of his words and the well-thought-out plan of his book quite efficacious! I've read so many self-help books, with most of them being quite boring, redundant, unoriginal, and at best adequate. I found this one to be quite exceptional and recommend it to those who need a self-help kick to get their project started or their goals achieved. Here is an excerpt below. I always love including the actual words from the books I have read to share the author's voice and tone! I have no idea how I came across this book, and I haven't read these types of books in some time, but I'm glad it came into my hands! It made me think a lot about how discipline works.

Self-discipline is the ability to do what you should do, when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not...Another definition of self-discipline is self-mastery. Success is possible only when you can master your own emotions, appetites, and inclinations. People who lack the ability to master their appetites become weak and dissolute, as well as unreliable in other things. Self-discipline can also be defined as self-control. Your ability to control yourself and your actions, control what you say and do, and ensure that your behaviors are consistent with your long-term goals and objectives is the mark of the superior person.

All of us have an idea of what needs to be done, but many of us procrastinate or justify not accomplishing what we really dream of doing. Usually, we cite good reasons for not accomplishing what we intended, or because we faced certain obstacles, or due to unforeseen circumstances. This book is a great reminder that it is always our choice in the end. Even when facing such things as a weather-related event that we have no control over, the way we react to it is always our choice. I have found this book very encouraging, and the constant reminder of "it is my choice" has proven very helpful to me in avoiding even typical common complaints. I recommend this book as a book that will help you put into practice what you already know.

Brian's latest book is definitely one of his very best... In "No Excuses", he outlines the exact strategies we need to be effective and focused. For the fellow small-biz entrepreneurs out there, you'll appreciate the need for focus and accountability. What Brian achieves in "No Excuses" is remarkable because he reveals a wide variety of strategies that are specific and actionable for several main areas. Reading "No Excuses" is like getting an extensive coaching session from Brian, because he delivers a message of personal responsibility, accountability, focus, and decision-making in a superbly readable and useful manner. Highly recommended; thanks so much, Brian, for all you've done -- this is one of your best books ever. They're all good; it's nice to see they get even better with time, in this new release.

What's the big deal about self-discipline? JUST DO IT, right? Easier said than done! What this book explains is WHY we need to do it, and the amazing results that are not only possible, but inevitable: results that are impossible otherwise, no matter how badly we want them. With very simple exercises to flex one's discipline muscles, Brian shows how to transform one's attitude and ability. My favorite part of the writing, however, is how meticulously he details the rewards of self-discipline in such a logical and straightforward way. It is incredibly motivating and inspiring, and you are able to visualize in your own life what is possible and actually believe it.

This is an absolute must-read for people who really want to take control of their lives. From managing finances to understanding how to respond to life's issues, this book covers so much ground in 21 chapters. I haven't been able to put the book down since it arrived. I was actually looking for a book on willpower, but this one took it in a whole different direction. To no disappointment whatsoever, though, I have found some breakthrough principles in here that I will hold on to dearly. Again, a must-read for just about everybody. Purchase this book!!! You will be grateful that you did.

Basically, Brian Tracy gives you step-by-step, simple instructions for living a full life with no regrets. He has pulled together all the common--and sometimes not so common--sense rules for conducting your life with integrity and accomplishing your professional and personal goals. I originally purchased this as an audiobook, then decided it was so good that I needed to purchase the hard copy version so that I could work through the assignments he suggests. There was nothing in it that I hadn't heard before, but he tells me how to DO it.

I love this book! I have read a few books on “bettering yourself,” and I feel like this is the first one that I have actually learned a whole lot from. Each chapter is broken down into manageable steps, and at the end of each chapter, there are some optional writing options. Although that’s an extra step, I feel like it’s very beneficial for locking in the information and growing from it! I have highly recommended this book to lots of people!
