Samuel Smiles (1812–1904) was a Scottish author and reformer. Smiles originally trained as a doctor but later became more interested in social reform and politics. He began to write for liberal newspapers and became very involved in the reform movement. His campaigning for change and broader social reform in the middle of the 19th century led to him writing self-help and motivational literature.
