“Experience has proven that the best-educated people are often those who are known as ‘self-made’ or self-educated. It takes more than a university degree to make one a person of education.” -Napoleon Hill
Entrepreneurs are creative, innovative, driven, and free-thinking. They aren’t compelled to follow traditional paths. They dare to take risks and live on their own terms.
Leaders and innovators such as Steve Jobs, Anna Wintour, Dave Thomas, and Rachel Ray have shown us that a college degree isn’t the only path to success. None of those incredibly successful people graduated from college, yet they made their mark on the world in big ways.
While they didn’t finish a university degree, like all successful entrepreneurs, they were fully invested in their education.
Whatever form it takes, learning is essential. Even with a university degree, learning never stops, and the more you master, the more successful you’ll be. When starting a business, you’ll need to learn from your mistakes, from mentors, from seminars, from podcasts, and especially from books.
So why focus on books? For one, there is a wealth of knowledge and advice at your fingertips in the form of books about entrepreneurship. There are thousands of books for someone building a business; this source of knowledge will never dry up.
Secondly, a book can distill decades of experience and knowledge into a compact guide but with more detail and depth than a podcast or seminar. You can learn from others’ experiences without having to repeat their mistakes. Books let you access the greatest minds of the past centuries, allowing you to learn directly from the most innovative and successful leaders of our time.
While having a mentor is invaluable, entrepreneurship books give you a wide variety of perspectives and experiences. Rather than learn from just one individual’s experience, you can learn from dozens of entrepreneurs and start to see trends, patterns, and commonalities among their strategies.
For most entrepreneurs, finding the time to invest in reading is the biggest roadblock to their continued education. We get it; you have a lot of balls in the air. You might be juggling multiple companies, family responsibilities, volunteer obligations, and your own hobbies and self-care. Reading might be low on your priority list.
We know the benefits of reading for our kids, but making time for it as an adult is hard. But that shouldn’t be the case. Reading (or listening to) books is essential to your ongoing education and a key component of your growth and success. It will help you be more effective in your business. Reading can even help improve your focus, help you sleep better at night, and reduce stress.
Even if you are determined to expand your knowledge and skills with reading, sifting through the thousands of books for business owners and entrepreneurs is a daunting task. Then you must deal with library hold lines or spend a fortune purchasing books. Sometimes, the hassle doesn’t feel worth it. That’s why we want to offer you access to our pre-vetted online book library on entrepreneurship.

“The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat.”
Before writing his timeless guide to personal and professional success, Napoleon Hill interviewed the most influential and successful leaders of his time, including Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan, and John D. Rockefeller. He wanted to determine what traits and habits made for a prosperous life.
His book has inspired generations of leaders and is as relevant today as it was almost a hundred years ago. He outlines 13 principles for a successful life, the most significant of which is the importance of desire.
It is not enough to wish. To achieve our goals, we must find a burning desire that won’t be thwarted by setbacks and failures. Hill uses the example of Thomas Edison, who didn’t give up after more than 10,000 failed experiments because he was passionate about what he wanted to achieve. He eventually succeeded in developing the first electric light bulb.
According to Hill, our desires need a timeline and a concrete good or service that will result from achieving our goal. This will give us the motivation to take action, put in the work, and sacrifice to achieve our greatest dreams.
“Success is 20% skills and 80% strategy. You might know how to read, but more importantly, what’s your plan to read?”
At the age of 25, Jim Rohn was buried in debt and could see no way out of his situation. With the aid of a mentor, Jim began to see that he wasn’t a victim of his circumstances and that what he needed was a change in perspective and habits. Six years later, Rohn had paid off his debts and had a net worth of $1 million. In his book, he shares his secret to not only financial success but also living a fulfilling life.
Some key takeaways include the importance of fundamental habits and discipline as the bridge between inspiration and creating something of value. Success is simultaneously a journey and a destination. It is the consistent progress toward a goal and the achievement of that goal. Study is the building block of life change. If you want to be successful, study success. If you want to be happy, study happiness. Rohn emphasizes that “all leaders are readers.” Successful people are full of curiosity and are always reading and learning.
“Your diamonds are not in far-away mountains or distant seas; they are usually in your own backyard if you take the time to look for them.”
In Acres of Diamonds, Conwell tells a parable of a wealthy Persian farmer, Ali Hafed. He was content and well-off until he met a priest who told him about diamonds. The priest told him that he could buy a whole county with just one diamond, and with a diamond mind, he could put his daughters upon thrones.
Hafed was no longer content but became obsessed with finding diamonds. He sold his farm, left his family, and traveled the world searching for these elusive riches. Eventually, he ran out of money and threw himself into the sea, broke and devastated.
Meanwhile, back in Persia, the man who bought his farm found an unusual stone one day. He brought it home and put it on the mantle. When the old priest came to visit, he realized the rock was a diamond. That day, the priest and the farmer discovered the diamond mines of Golconda. All along, Ali Hafed had been living in his own field of diamonds, if only he had the sense to recognize it.
Conwell encourages readers to recognize and develop the assets they already possess rather than looking for wealth and fulfillment in faraway places. He warns that while ambition is good, we should not be driven by greed and should work hard to look for opportunities that may already surround us.
