Books to Read for Growth Mindset for Bibliophiles

In all our years of mentoring new entrepreneurs, we have found that fear is one of the greatest roadblocks preventing people from reaching their potential and smashing their goals.

Fear is natural anytime you start something new. You may be afraid of failure, looking bad, or having to start small. You may be afraid of the effort and discomfort required to get a venture off the ground or grow your business.

The truth is that while you may not notice it, there is also a cost to staying where you are. Tony Robbins famously says, “If you aren’t growing, you’re dying.” It is an uncomfortable truth that life is, well, uncomfortable. There is pain with staying stagnant, and there is pain with growing.

So, you have to choose what kind of discomfort you want to experience. Do you want to stay where you are now and face lost opportunities and regrets? Or do you want the uncomfortable feeling of stepping outside your comfort zone, trying new things, and growing?

+ True Growth Happens Outside Our Comfort Zones

Successful people aren’t afraid to fail. Their hunger to do more, achieve more, and give more drives them past fear.

Check out one of our favorite Napoleon Hill quotes:

“Every failure comes with the seed of an equivalent advantage.”

Failure doesn’t have to be a setback; it can be an opportunity. And the bigger the failure, the greater the opportunity. However, like a seed, it requires careful nurturing and care. You have to be willing to learn from your failures, evaluate what went wrong, and use that information to adjust, change, and progress.

This is the essence of a growth mindset: having the courage to take chances, viewing failure as a stepping stone to success, and persisting even when things get difficult. A growth mindset will drive you to success when others give up. It will allow you to overcome obstacles and face your fears.

The good news is that you can cultivate a growth mindset, and the Secrets of Success Mastermind can help you start today.

+ What Does it Take to Develop a Growth Mindset

Over the years, authors, coaches, and leaders in the field of success psychology have mapped a path to developing a growth mindset. The Secrets of Success Mastermind will help put you on this path. Here’s a sampling of the steps we’ll help you take to re-orient your mindset:

  1. Welcome Imperfection

Nothing in our universe is perfect. Imperfection is a part of being human, and all great things done in our world were done by people who didn’t wait until they were perfect to act. Our mistakes, shortcomings, and struggles are what give us room to grow and inspire creativity. Instead of feeling held back by your imperfections, use them as motivation to progress.

  2. Stop Seeking Approval From Others

If you live your life in fear of what others will think of you, you will be hobbled in the pursuit of your goals. You have to be free to take risks, make mistakes, and try again. You know your true character. What other people think doesn’t matter.

In the words of Napoleon Hill, “Put your foot upon the neck of the fear of criticism by reaching a decision not to worry about what other people think, do, or say.”

  3. Cultivate a Sense of Purpose

If you spend all your time chasing a bigger paycheck, a more prestigious role, or even just trying to check everything off your to-do list, you will quickly become discouraged. Mental fortitude and fulfillment come from striving toward a greater purpose in our lives.

Spend some time discovering what your purpose is. What can you offer to the world? What makes you want to get up in the morning? When your daily tasks are connected to your purpose, you will be empowered to keep going even when things are difficult. Richard Leider said, “The purpose of life is to live a life of purpose.”

  4. Embrace the Process

Accept that the journey is just as important as the final destination. Jim Rohn said, “[Success] is both a journey and a destination. It is both the steady, measured progress towards a goal and the achievement of a goal.”

Happiness is what comes as you move steadily toward a goal. You don’t have to wait for joy and success until a later date. You can experience them each day as you take disciplined steps toward your objective.

  5. See Failures as Opportunities

What separates successful individuals from everyone else is not failure but how that person responds to failure. Stephen King’s first novel was rejected 30 times. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Oprah Winfrey was fired from her first news job, and her bosses said she was “unfit for television news.” Walt Disney’s supervisors told him that he “lacked imagination,” and his first animation studio went bankrupt.

But all of these people refused to give up and give in. They used their failures to fuel the fire of their motivation and worked even harder. They went on to change our world.

Napoleon Hill explained, “Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat and, perhaps, some failure. When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit. That is exactly what the majority of men do. More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them.”

+ Books to Read for a Growth Mindset

If you want to cultivate your own growth mindset, start by learning from the best. Russell Brunson is now a successful entrepreneur, best-selling author, podcast host, and mentor. But when he first started out, he relied heavily on books.

He read everything he could get his hands on. This included books about marketing or business secrets, but the books that had the greatest impact on him and his success were those by authors such as Napoleon Hill and Charles Haanel, which really dive into the psychology of success.

The more he read, the more he came to understand that success in business is only 10% tactics and 90% psychology. If you want to be financially profitable, make an impact in the world, or simply find more joy in your life, it all comes down to your mind.

We want to give you all the resources that you need to master your psychology. Over the years Russell Brunson has read and collected hundreds of the best resources to read for a growth mindset. These books are all housed in the beautiful Atlas Library in Boise, Idaho, along with original manuscripts, magazines, first editions, and artifacts. All these resources are available to you when you join the Secrets of Success Mastermind.

Here is a sample of the growth mindset books you will learn from when you join the Secrets of Success Mastermind:

“Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill

“Remember, too, that all who succeed in life get off to a bad start and pass through many heartbreaking struggles before they ‘arrive.’ The turning point in the lives of those who succeed usually comes at the moment of some crisis, through which they are introduced to their ‘other selves’.”

“Think and Grow Rich” is probably Napoleon Hill’s most well-known work, and for good reason. It was first published in 1937 and was the result of Hill interviewing dozens of the most successful leaders and businessmen of his time, including Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and Theodore Roosevelt.

In this book, Hill reveals the “secret” of success, which he calls the Law of Attraction. In essence, positive thoughts bring positive results into a person’s life, while negative thoughts attract negative outcomes. His ideas have been used successfully by generations of self-made millionaires.

A large part of what Hill teaches in “Think and Grow Rich” is that we have to be willing and able to accept opportunities when they present themselves in our lives. Many people miss opportunities for growth and success because they are disguised as setbacks or failures. In order to succeed, you have to persevere through temporary defeats.

Hill said, “That is one of the tricks of opportunity. It has a sly habit of slipping in by the back door, and often, it comes disguised in the form of misfortune or temporary defeat. Perhaps this is why so many fail to recognize opportunity.”

“The Strangest Secret” by Earl Nightingale

“The only person who succeeds is the person who is progressively realizing a worthy ideal. He’s the person who says, ‘I’m going to become this,’ and then begins to work toward that goal.”

This book is actually a 44-page essay adapted from one of Earl Nightingale’s popular weekly motivational talks. The secret that Nightingale wants to share is that “you are now, and you do become, what you think about.”

The human mind is the last, great, unexplored continent. If we can unlock the potential of our minds, we have the power to accomplish anything we desire. We must focus on a worthwhile goal and then put all our energy into pursuing that goal. Picture your goal in a relaxed, positive way. Picture having already achieved your goal. Don’t tolerate negative thoughts because they will bring negative results into your life. When you have a negative thought, replace it with a positive vision of your goal.

It is easier for the human brain to focus on the bad things–on our fears and failures–which is why only 5% of people are ever really successful. However, if you have the discipline to control your thinking, it will lead you to a life of success, wealth, and happiness.

“The Power of Purpose” by Richard J. Leider

“People with a sense of purpose have learned to let life question them and have moved the focus of their attention and concern away from themselves to others. Purpose, then, is not a job or a role or a goal. It is the belief that our lives, our part in the whole of things, truly matter. Having a profound sense of who we are, where we came from, and where we’re going, we choose to believe that mattering matters. It is thus a mindset—a choice.”

Richard Leider is ranked by Forbes as one of the top five most influential executive coaches. In this bestselling classic, he gives you the tools for unlocking meaning and fulfillment. It isn’t enough to just be successful if you are not guided by a greater purpose in life. Part of a growth mindset is not just overcoming obstacles and failures but connecting everything you do to that purpose, which is your reason for getting up every morning. A sense of purpose is what drives us to keep going when others give up. It is what ultimately drives us to achieve our goals.

Leider warns that too many of us are “getting ready to live” instead of relentlessly pursuing our lives now. When we are 65 or 75, will we look back at our lives and realize that we have run out of time?

The key to avoiding regret is to find and connect with your purpose today. You can do this by regularly asking yourself the questions that define your purpose and will, therefore, define your life. Ask, “Who am I?” and “What am I meant to do here?” You can write out a purpose statement by starting with this phrase: “The reason I get up in the morning is to…”
