The Mental Equivalent

Emmet Fox

About the Author

A New Thought leader and an influential voice in metaphysical Christianity throughout the Great Depression, Emmet Fox (1886–1951) believed that true transformation occurred from within and that the outer world reflected a person's inner thoughts. His teachings came from scripture but emphasized practical applications. His ideas continue to inspire seekers of spiritual and personal development.

About the Book

"The Mental Equivalent" is a brief yet powerful booklet that distills one of Emmet Fox's most essential teachings: You must create a mental image of the life you want before it can manifest. This work outlines how to construct "mental equivalents" that align your inner vision with your desired results.

Summary

In this concise book, Fox guides readers in applying spiritual laws to enhance relationships and boost success. Key takeaways include:

  • Every Outer Condition Has an Inner Equivalent: To Fox, everything in the outer world mirrors a corresponding belief or pattern in a person's inner world. If you want to change the outer, you must first shift the inner.
  • Building the Mental Equivalent: The author emphasizes that clear thinking is necessary to build a mental equivalent. Vague wishes or a lacking thought won't do. Your thoughts should be as clear as possible.
  • The Power of Visualization: You must clearly picture in your mind the reality you wish to create. Mental imagery is the bridge between desire and manifestation. The mind responds more to vivid, detailed inner pictures than vague intentions.
  • Faith and Expectation Are Essential: It's not enough to think clearly; you must also believe in the possibility of your desired outcome. Faith acts as the energizing force that drives the mental equivalent into reality.
  • Consistency and Persistence: Your repeated, steady focus on the mental equivalent is crucial. Occasional or half-hearted efforts won't create lasting results. Consistent mental attention aligns your inner and outer worlds.
  • Aligning Thoughts and Emotions: Your emotional state must match your mental equivalent. Doubt, fear, or negativity blocks the creative process, but cultivating calm confidence reinforces your inner blueprint.
  • Avoiding Contradictory Thinking: Conflicting thoughts dilute your mental equivalent. Fox warns that scattered or contradictory thinking undermines manifestation; mental clarity and single-mindedness are key.

Fox's teachings transcend theory as he helps readers apply these beliefs to daily situations, from health and wealth to relationships. He highlights that spiritual laws work in ordinary life as much as in abstract ideals.

Reader Reviews
I've been studying the impact of thought on life conditions and situations, and this book gives a clear and powerful explanation that if we desire to be, do, or have something, we must hold a clear image of it in our minds. I liked the illustration used about taking a picture of an object. You can not take two different pictures at the same time. You must focus on one object to capture it in the photo. You must see yourself or your situation as you desire, not as it is. You can hold on to the mental movie of your current situation, or you can create a new mental movie of you in your desired situation. Anyone exploring the power of thoughts and imaging should absolutely have this book. I really like it because it gets straight to the point and is a short book, yet stuffed full of insightful instruction and advice. It's the kind of book you carry with you and read a chapter or passage when you get an internal nudge. Read it regularly to ensure the concepts stick.

Emmet Fox was remarkable. His works are a real blessing.

In particular, this one came to me at the right time and the right place. I found the mental equivalent during my hospital stay, and the mental equivalent was exactly what I was in need of as a tool to help aid me in my healing. Remarkable.

Everything is mental. What you think, you manifest. If you are thinking about how sick you are, you are attracting sickness, and you'll have more. Emmet Fox shows us how to change our thoughts to attract what we DO want, not what we DON'T want.

Emmet is so inspiring! This man is 1 of my top 3 favorite authors of all time. I read anything and everything I can find with his name on it! He takes passages of the bible and breaks them down for any stage or age of the spiritual path.
