Emmet Fox (1886–1951) was an influential leader of New Thought in the metaphysical movement of the early 20th century. Known for his powerful interpretations of biblical texts, Fox emphasized practical spirituality rooted in personal transformation. His lectures and writings amidst the Great Depression and World War II offered hope and clarity during uncertain times.
In "The Sermon on the Mount: The Key to Success in Life," Fox boldly reinterprets Christ's most famous sermon as a practical guide to living successfully and purposefully. Fox strips away dogma and reveals the deep metaphysical meanings behind the Beatitudes and other teachings, showing how they can transform thought, behavior, and ultimately, one's entire life.
Fox's interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount encouraged readers to shape their reality through spiritual understanding and focused intention. Key points in this book include:

"You must not under any pretense allow your mind to dwell on any thought that is not positive, constructive, optimistic, or kind."
Having been agnostic for most of my life, I put aside my prejudice and read some of this book. Then I read the rest of it.
I was introduced to this book at an AA meeting. It was a vital missing piece that I needed to help me finally grasp the spiritual part of the 12 steps. I guess I had enough willingness to finally try anything to stay sober. So, I read this book and discussed it with my sponsor.
Emmet Fox does an excellent job taking the religious dogma and putting it aside whilst preserving the gist of what is important to hear. I was sort of astonished at the change of attitude and outlook I took from having read this book.
I hope you may find what you're looking for. Certainly, I am convinced that reading this will do no harm or get in the way of that.
This is the most wonderful interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount I have yet found. I have read this small book many years ago, but its words have become engraved on my mind and in my heart, and it has had a profound impact upon my life.
It deals with spiritual truths, which many people recite through prayer daily, but don't give much thought to. This little book points out in a very clear way all the elements of not only praying in a way that the prayers are answered, but of creating a successful life - and developing attitude, character, and consciousness that brings about that success.
This book has, in its own way, changed the way I look upon my relationship with God and my relationship with abundance and one's daily bread". It has also kept me aware that if one desires to open the way, before the person even begins to pray, the person first needs to cleanse his mind and heart, and forgive anyone toward whom he holds any form of unforgiveness (including himself).
Fox's dissection and metaphysical explanation of the teachings of Jesus as contained in the Sermon on the Mount (which was not, of course, a single sermon and wasn't delivered on a mount) is incredibly insightful and helpful. Many scholars and others have said that if we had no more of Jesus' teachings than these three chapters in Matthew, we'd have the entirety of Christ's thinking as offered by the man Jesus.
The language Fox uses is clear and straightforward. His teachings about the subtle meanings and impacts of the Beatitudes are some of the best metaphysical writing I've read. With a solid underpinning of spiritual and philosophical understanding, Fox manages to offer specific advice and guidelines for how we can live our lives to emulate the character traits and behaviors singled out by Jesus in teaching his disciples this material. Highly recommended.
This book is easily one of the most important books I have ever read. I have been studying spirituality and metaphysical books for over 10 years and have read many books from some of the greatest teachers there are, but I have not found any that have had such an effect on my life and my family's as well.
Emmet Fox just slices through some of the most difficult texts (especially biblical ones) and speaks right to your heart. The truth of his words is so powerful that it brought me to tears. I have the first copy of this book that is almost completely worn out, but I buy several every year to give to friends and try to read it again yearly, as it really does continue to teach with every reading.
Reading this book truly shifted my perspective. I love how Fox dives into aspects of Jesus’ teachings that we often overlook. The fact that Jesus delivered these messages outdoors, directly to the people, makes them feel even more powerful and timeless.
This book reinforces the idea that we create our own reality and are in constant collaboration with the highest power. Jesus consistently emphasized that karma is real—we must forgive as much as we expect forgiveness. Dwelling on the past holds us back; instead, we should focus on moving forward.
Nothing enters our experience without our permission, whether consciously or subconsciously, and it’s our responsibility to recognize what we are allowing into our lives. Many people turn to God only when faced with hardship—I was once one of them. But now, I understand the law and how to navigate within it.
This book is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus’ teachings and how they apply to our daily lives.
