"Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for less problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for less challenge, wish for more wisdom."
I "know" Jim Rohn for years. I never hesitate to call him a mentor and a great inspiration for me. It was his speeches that marked the starting point, the foundation of my personal development journey. So let’s say I’m kinda biased. But there’s a reason for that. His way of explaining complex things so easily and metaphorically is astonishing. His pictures are vivid, and his teachings are relatable. The term "business-philosopher" fits perfectly; that’s what he is. A philosopher who wants mankind to be successful and happy. I owe him much; may he rest in peace.
So, "The seasons of life" is a very short summary of his philosophy of life (at least a partial aspect of it) and a great analogy of life through the change of seasons. It is literarily very well written. The words used, the pictures shown, the comparisons drawn. Amazing.
To see life as a cycle of sowing (spring), constant effort of protection and nurturing (summer), reaping (fall), and adversity (winter) is on point and very much relatable. The only constant here is change itself. "We either improve, or we regress, for never do we remain the same."
Jim Rohn describes the phases of life and the point of view of those who will accomplish little (because they belittle others, seek faults elsewhere, constantly have a victim mentality, play when it’s time to work and are surprised when they cannot harvest when others do) and those who are daring greatly and are going to be successful (so God will), because they’re always holding themselves accountable, see adversity as chances to readjust, have a great work ethic and are kind human beings.
Seldom did I use my text marker that much...so many quotes -or better said, aphorisms- can be put on one's wall to read now and then. I can understand that some people will say I overexaggerate, but I easily claim that this little book will hold a recipe for success. Understanding and living its principles is maybe not a guarantee for a great life, but it is shifting the odds greatly in one's favor.
For most, we remain forever in one of two categories—either poor, seeking to become wealthy, or wealthy, seeking always to rediscover the happiness we had while we were poor.
Can’t go wrong with a Jim Rohn book; it’s too bad he only wrote a couple of them. Luckily, we still have some of his speeches. This book is written comparing the changes in the seasons to how we experience life. Ups and downs, warm and cold, productive and unproductive.
The world doesn’t really have time to care which choices you make, so for yourself at least, give a run at adventure, with your eyes firmly set on achievement, not merely existence and self-pity.
If you’re already familiar with his work, this is still a good one to read. Some concepts and ideas go more into detail than his speeches. He also doesn’t hold back as much and doesn’t coddle the reader. In his speeches, he uses a lot of humor to keep the mood light. There is no humor here, only facts and concepts, with a focus on lifelong effort.
It takes effort to become aware of our staggering and limitless abilities. It takes effort to become enthusiastic over a cause or an occupation. It takes effort to continue when our results-as well as our failures, tell us to give up trying. It takes effort to feel right about everything that happens—the joy as well as the sorrows of life. And it also takes effort to learn to love ourselves above all others, especially when we are so consciously aware of our failures, doubts, and tragedies. It does not, however, take effort to fail. It requires little else than a slowly deteriorating attitude about our present, our future, and about ourselves.
"The Seasons Of Life" by Jim Rohn is the iconic business philosopher's first book. It shares lessons of life related to lessons of nature that occur during the seasons. It is a simple book, but the lessons found within these pages are profound. The book is really about living the best life you can live, while enjoying the journey.
I've enjoyed Jim Rohn's CDs and DVD programs for years. His down-to-earth, common-sense messages resonate with encouragement and advice on success. This book adds to the messages I've listened to. I especially like the last passage, "From this moment on, and for what remains of the balance of your life, make your commitment to excellence, remembering that it is your challenge to succeed. After all, you only have one life! Let's do something remarkable!"
Use Jim Rohn's lessons from "The Seasons Of Life" to do just that!
